DPF forced regeneration has been inbuilt by vehicle manufacturers as a way of cleaning the DPF via a maintenance process. This can only be started by the main dealer or a mechanic with the right equipment and access to the vehicles management systems. This process does not clear the ash, only the soot. Eventually, ash levels can reach a critical level which cannot be cleared.
The Forced Regeneration process usually involves starting a DPF clean cycle in the workshop, this runs the car at high revs for a long period of time. The ECU makes sure this cycle heats up the DPF to an extremely high temperature, which burns off the contents of the filter.
In some instances, fuel is injected into the post-combustion process to achieve these temperatures. The engine oil normally needs to be changed as these high temperatures severely reduce the effectiveness of the lubricant.
DPF regeneration most commonly uses active or passive regeneration. Whichever your car uses there are some conditions that need to be met in order for the regeneration process to begin. What’s required is usually a combination of engine temperature, speed and revs. As a general rule of thumb the engine needs to have reached normal operating temperature, you need to be travelling at more than 40MPH and you need at least 2500 revs. Depending on the effectiveness of your regeneration process and how blocked the filter is will determine how long the process takes.
